Applying for a Nursing Diploma Program
There are a few things you need to know before applying to one of the many available nursing schools. First and foremost, just about every nursing diploma program requires students to have a high school diploma or GED. In addition, you may be asked to complete one or several prerequisite courses at another educational institution.
The requirements for applying to a nursing program vary from school to school. In addition, there are nursing diplomas available from courses taught in hospitals, universities, community colleges, and occasionally even in high schools. Furthermore, some nursing diploma programs are offered online. When you contact a school their enrollment representatives will help you figure out what type of learning is best for you.
Nursing Diploma Coursework
No matter what type of diploma program you enroll in, you will encounter a standard set of nursing courses. In addition to your classes, you will spend time training in a clinical setting. In fact, many nursing diploma programs are taught in hospitals themselves. Some of the classes you might take include the following:
- Adult Nursing
- Child Nursing
- Mental Health Care
- Medical Terminology
- Social and Behavioral Science
- Introduction to Nursing
Other Types of Nursing Programs
Although nursing diploma programs used to be the only way to become a nurse, several other types of education programs have been created over the past several decades. These include both nursing certificate programs and nursing degree programs.
A certificate program usually lasts a year and they are most often offered at community colleges and high schools. With a nursing certificate, you will be able to become a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) or a Licensed Vocational Nurse (LVN). These types of nurses tend to work under the supervision of an RN and they spend most of their time recording patient information, administering basic care, and aiding physicians.
There are several different types of degree programs including associate’s degrees in nursing and bachelor’s degrees in nursing. These programs are similar to nursing diploma programs and they can take anywhere from 2 to 4 years to complete. Like earning a diploma, a nursing degree will allow you to become an RN. However, a nurse with an advanced degree may take on more of a leadership role and could even become eligible for administrative or research positions.
After Earning a Nursing Diploma
Once you earn a diploma in nursing, you will still have to become licensed before you can begin working. All RNs are required to pass the NCLEX-RN exam. This costs $200 to take and it is administered by the National Council of State Boards of Nursing at various locations in every state.
Beyond earning your diploma in nursing and becoming licensed, there are several ways you can continue your education even after you begin working. Many nurses choose to earn a certificate in a specialized area of nursing. With a specialized degree, you may able to earn a higher salary and work in a more focused area related to your interests.
