BSN Degree Programs

BSN Degree Programs

A bachelor’s degree in nursing is the preferred education path for those interested in improving their career potential as a Registered Nurse (RN). With a BSN degree, you will open the doors to a wide variety of career paths with the chance of earning a higher than average nursing salary. You can earn your BSN online or in person at any number of accredited nursing schools across the country. While there are many options when it comes to choosing a nurse training program, BSN degrees typically take the longest to earn.

BSN Degree Coursework

A typical BSN program takes approximately 4 years to earn. Because of this, you will take a wide variety of nursing courses in addition to a series of general education classes. Keep in mind, not all of your time will be spent in the classroom. Anyone training to become an RN will complete several hours of clinical work, especially nurses seeking a BSN degree. Often times RNs who have already earned an ADN degree prefer to enroll in what’s known as an RN-BSN program that helps them increase their knowledge of the field while maintaining their job and continuing to accumulate first-hand experience.

Although every bachelor’s in nursing program is different, you will generally take classes in the following subjects:

  • Anatomy
  • Biology
  • Leadership and communication
  • Social sciences
  • Physiology
  • Pharmacology
  • Biology

As with any nurse training program, you will also complete classes related specifically to the role a nurse plays in a healthcare environment. You may have the chance to take classes in areas related to ambulatory care, critical care, hospice care, and more. Some courses will be required while others will others you can choose from according to your interests.

After Earning a BSN Degree

If you haven’t already joined the nursing field before pursuing your bachelor’s degree, you’ll need to first take all the necessary licensing exams for your state. Registered Nurses need to pass the NCLEX-RN exam. This is administered by the National Council of State Boards of nursing and it costs $200 to take. You can ask your enrollment officers at your school if they have offer any specialized NCLEX-RN preparation classes.

There are also several nursing certifications available for different career specializations like hospice care, respiratory care, emergency care, and more. If you are interested in a particular work environment or patient type, becoming specialized may be the best option for you. Focusing on one area of the nursing field is a great way of improving your credentials and boosting your earning potential. Once again, school officials will be able to tell you if your program offers any kind of specialized training.
